Stephansplatz (St. Stephan’s Square) is Vienna’s touristic hot spot, with the highest frequency of visitors. Vienna’s Stephansdom (St. Stephan’s Cathedral), also known to the Viennese as Steffl, is Vienna’s most significant landmark. The cathedral is 107m long, 34m wide and is one of the most important Gothic structures in Austria.

Parts of the late Romanesque structure, dating from 1230 – 1263, have been preserved to this day. The cathedral has four spires, the highest being the south one, and standing at 137m. By contrast, the unfinished northern spire is only 68m high. The two western spires, reaching to a height of approximately 65m, stand to the left and to the right of the main entry.
