Alter Markt belongs to the oldest weekly markets. The central, Main Square of Salzburg connects to a milk market, an herb market, a beet and cabbage market and the Hafnermarkt. The Square is bordered by a row of splendid historic houses, many of which have survived since the middle-ages. Today Alte Markt is known for its luxury shops, such as the recent new-comer, Prada. Due to the design, however, it is quite time-consuming trying to find appropriate land plots.
